Outdoor Education
Grounded in a deep respect for people and places, Riverdale Outdoor Education seeks to foster lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship. This engagement begins with learning experiences that encourage wonder at the natural world.Outdoor educators guide students as they develop their own sense of purpose in the face of significant environmental challenges they will inherit as twenty-first century citizen-leaders. Fundamental to this approach is an emphasis on place-based study, physical challenge, and ethical questioning that help individuals build the strength of character necessary to help others.
Global Studies
The Riverdale Global Studies Program supports students as they develop into global stewards and citizens. Whether in the Bronx or places around the world, Riverdale students explore local communities’ perspectives and expertise as they address challenging social issues. By learning and working alongside activists, entrepreneurs, and other students, they become culturally competent problem-solvers, working to create a more sustainable and just community at school and beyond.
Service Learning
Riverdale connects students with communities through meaningful service. While the service learning team offers opportunities, students and families are also encouraged to bring their own ideas. Recently, Riverdale families participated in a citywide park cleanup with the Forest for All Coalition at Riverdale Park. They’ve also packed and delivered produce with Grassroots Grocery, joined their Student Food Recovery Task Force, and supported local organizations through events like the Middle School Community Day Walk-a-Thon. Students serve as “Homework Helpers” with Part of the Solution (POTS), support The Friendly Fridge Foundation and God’s Love We Deliver, and participate in the Riverkeeper Sweep. The Junior class hosts the Best Buddies Friendship Prom, promoting social inclusion, while the Senior class organizes the “Breakfast with Bunny” event for children from LSA Family Health Services.
