Academics

Mind + Character + Community

At Riverdale, we emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving. Educators prompt students to ask questions and make their own connections, encouraging them to become open-minded critical thinkers who can see the human experience from multiple perspectives. The Lower School comes together regularly for assemblies, buddy class activities, and heritage celebrations, providing opportunities for students and teachers alike to share their experiences and learn from each other.

Interdisciplinary Approach

With two teachers in every classroom and the support of literacy and math specialists; art, music, drama, physical education, and Spanish teachers; interdisciplinary integrators; and outdoor educators, students are supported by a large network as they begin their academic journey. From early in their Lower School journey, students experience an interdisciplinary approach. In reading, writing, and math, a workshop model of instruction allows students to develop at their own pace and to learn from collaborating with others.

Campus Learning Hub

Our campus encourages active learning, allowing students the freedom to play outside and explore the world. Science classes have an ever-changing outdoor laboratory for the study of plants, animals, birds, and the Hudson River. Students’ home-base work is complemented by hands-on experiences in the Build Space and the Learning Lab where they can design, build, and code solutions to problems that arise in class. Outdoor education gives students outlets for their energy, creativity, and curiosity, and physical education classes use the full-size playing field, tennis courts, and basketball courts. Students develop an appreciation for nature and a spirit of risk-taking and adventure.

Lower School students dive into character, identity, and folklore through engaging classroom lessons. Guided by drama specialists, they bring their studies to life with original plays that showcase their learning and imagination.
Students sit on the floor among paper versions of buildings.
Grade 1 students built community sculptures from recycled boxes, blending art with inquiry. They then assembled structures, programmed, and navigated indy bots through their creations with the Integrator Team.
