Stories

Beginning with our youngest learners, students at Riverdale Country develop an appreciation for the natural environment through “garden to table” activities and explorations of the surrounding urban forest. “These experiential learning opportunities help students understand the importance of environmental stewardship, and they begin making connections between concepts of sustainability,” says Dr. James Duval, Associate Head of School, Head of Lower School, and TEDx RiverdaleCountrySchool lead organizer.

With Riverdale Country School’s mission and commitment to change our world for the good, we seek ways to connect our vision with thought leaders from around the globe, including from our extended community of alumni, parents, and community leaders. Riverdale is a place where individuals come to find inspiration and share solutions grounded in a deep and meaningful exchange of ideas.

In May of 2024, Riverdale will once again stage a TEDx event and host a collection of speakers who are transforming the way we think about sustainability in urban environments. “Our goal is to have a combination of speakers from within and outside the school community and have Riverdale serve as the central hub for synergistic learning,” says Dr. James Duval, Associate Head of School and Head of Lower School, who serves as Riverdale’s lead organizer of its TEDx event. “We are inviting those involved in the exciting work of urban sustainability to apply to speak at our event,” adds Dr. Duval.

TED, which began in 1984, is an organization and conference where technology, entertainment, and design converge, and where initiatives from science to business are presented. TEDx is a grassroots initiative, which brings TED’s mission of “ideas worth spreading” to local communities. There are more than 3,000 TEDx events held annually, all over the world.
